If
you reside in the area of Paver Installation Services in Central Bucks County, PA, you are probably aware that
our yards are somewhat of a lottery. We might have perfect-looking yards one
week that are barbecue-ready. However, the very next week, we would be walking
over puddles and mud as if we are crossing a river. Drainage troubles have
become a common topic of conversation due to rain showers in spring and the
clay-rich soil in most areas.
We
teamed up with a local family a couple of months ago to find a solution to a
very soggy backyard problem that limited the kids' ability to play outside.
Using a straightforward paver approach, it was possible to convert that dirty
area into a tidy and functional hang-out spot — and this was done without the
yard being completely dismantled. I think it would be helpful if I shared their
experience and a few of the takeaways that we got just in case you are facing
the same situation.
The Backyard Drainage Problem of Central Bucks
County
Those
who have lived in this area for a while are aware of the weather's
unpredictability. We get prolonged rain periods in the spring, and snow that
melts pretty quickly in the winter. If you put that together with the dense and
compacted soil that we have in the majority of the Bucks County areas, you have
a perfect storm for water that doesn't drain.
The Reasons Behind Drainage Issues
It
basically boils down to a few things that are unique to the area:
1.
Soil composition: The Central Bucks area is mostly characterized by clay-rich
soil which is not conducive to drainage.
2.
Mature neighborhoods: The houses have gradually settled over the years, which
has caused the yards to have dips.
3.
Sloped terrain: Water, as a rule, follows the downward slope and thus, in some
cases, ends up in flat or lower areas.
Therefore,
if you always get puddles after every rainstorm — you are not the only one.
This is quite a common problem around here.
A Introduction to the Homeowners
We
have cooperated with a family living in a suburb of Doylestown. They were not
troubled by flooding — that is, nothing out of the ordinary. More often than
not, it was the type of limp lawn that dried up only partially, even after
several days of sunshine.
After
every rain, the children brought their shoes to the house covered with mud. The
dog also brought mud in. They stopped inviting friends over to the backyard
because there was no place to gather that was dry and convenient. You can
probably picture it.
Their Goals
They
didn't want to have a complete overhaul with them. No heavy machinery plowing
through the entire yard. All they wanted was a tidy area for kids' activities,
outdoor meals, and maybe a fire pit later on.
On
top of that, they wanted something easy to maintain. With work and children,
they didn't have enough time to look after their yard every weekend.
How We Did It
Pavers
have proven to be a proper solution in most situations that we come across in
Central Bucks. They are usually a good compromise - aesthetically pleasing,
workable, and beneficial for drainage. They support water to flow through the
gaps thus, water can infiltrate the surrounding area without having to form a
pool.
Assessing the Site
When
we came to check out their place, there were several things that we realized
immediately:
1.
The lawn had a slight hollow that led to the fence at the back.
2.
The soil was very compacted, typical for this area.
3.
The grass never seemed fully dry — a sign that water wasn't being absorbed.
It
was quickly figured out that the problem was not only with surface water. Their
lawn had water underneath because the ground below was holding moisture.
Recommending Pavers
A
patio with pavers was an idea that gave the family a perfect and durable
outdoor space that would not get dirty with the rain. Besides, it offered a
space for family activities, and at the same time, it was still good for the
yard's drainage.
Many
people are quite shocked when told that pavers are not solely for
beautification purposes. In most cases, they serve as a drainage mechanism. If
they are installed properly (especially when a permeable base is used), pavers
help water to go through them and the run-off goes back to the soil naturally.
The Installation Process
We
did not complicate the installation process. There was no major car wreck. We
didn't cut the yard in half to carry out the job. It was simply a well-planned
upgrade.
Prepping the Space
We
leveled the area that was closest to us and dug out a shallow layer of soil to
start the job. The next thing was to spread a compacted base of crushed stone.
This is a very important step - besides that it facilitates water drainage, it
also stabilizes the pavers, which prevents them from shifting during subsequent
years.
Installing Pavers
We
laid the bricks after the preliminary work was done and put together the joint
material with a broom. This is how we enable water to access the underground
reservoir without finding it on the surface.
The
homeowners went for a style that was consistent with their other gardening
works - no flashy, just simple and traditional.
Clean-Up + Results
They
had most of the work done in a handful of days, and the change was quite
noticeable. Instead of a muddy area, they had a defined, durable surface ready
for the messes of life - chalk drawings, morning coffee, even the dog's
sunbathing sessions.
What We Learned Along the Way
Each
project is a lesson, even a long time experience has been achieved, and we,
still, can take something new from it. These are some of the points that we
found in this particular one.
Proper Base Makes All the Difference
The
best pavers can be bought, but if the foundation is not done correctly,
shifting, puddles, and uneven surfaces will be your problems soon. In Central
Bucks, building a strong base is always our priority as the soil here requires
it.
Picking the Right Paver Style
Homeowners
decided to go for a neutral stone-look, and it was the absolutely right
decision. The color and texture were perfect for their backyard, and it gave
them the freedom to make any additions in the future, e.g., a garden bed or a
small fire table.
Advice for Homeowners Facing Similar Issues
If
you see soft or soggy spots that don’t dry up, then this is a matter worthy of
your attention. Such problems do not solve themselves — they usually
deteriorate.
Spotting Early Drainage Signs
Watch
out for the following:
1.
Continuous puddles
2.
Mushy soil
3.
Grass that dies or looks waterlogged
4.
Places where the ground sinks slightly
If
you frequently see these signs, drainage may be the problem.
When to Call a Hardscacer
If
you have a yard that is always wet, especially after a moderate rain, then it
could be time to bring in a hardscaper. Simple patio or paver walkway can do so
much more than you think — and be the solution to your bigger problems later
on.
Other Local Ways to Improve Drainage
Pavers
are not the only solution. Here are some other alternatives that are equally
effective in Central Bucks:
1.
French drains to move water away from the area
2.
Correcting the grading to change water flow
3.
Permeable surfaces like gravel beds or porous pavers
The
correct option depends on your yard's design, soil, and how you utilize your
outdoor space.
Final Thoughts
What
I was most impressed with this project was how a very small change had such a
big effect. No major tearing down, no complicated systems — just a carefully
planned paver installation.
The
children of the family now go out to play in the afternoons and the dog doesn't
come in with dirty paws anymore. According to the family, their new patio has
become the most enjoyable place for weekend breakfast, and that, to me, is a
success.
